Every month, the Bristol Hub celebrates a business man and a business woman who are doing great things in the city. This month’s business man award goes to the managing director of Mortgage Style Ltd, Marcus Robinson.

Mortgage Style is an independent specialist mortgage brokerage, with offices in Portishead and Bristol.

They have been providing mortgage and financing advice to individuals and businesses for over 13 years.

They pride themselves in the quality of everything they do, and  have carefully selected a fantastic team of 8 mortgage brokers and administration staff to offer you the very best advice and service throughout the whole mortgage process.

Each one is a specialist in what they do and provide a friendly and professional service to their clients. Mortgage broking isn’t just about finding the most competitive rate for you, it’s also about matching the lender to your particular circumstances and submitting the case in the best light to ensure your application is successful.

Marcus recently took some time to answer a few questions about running his business. Hopefully some of his answers are helpful to people in Bristol who are looking to go into business themselves…

How did you get into starting the business?

I was employed as a mortgage broker and had ideas on how I wanted to deal with clients. I wanted to be able to spend time with people and offer a quality service so I re-mortgaged my house to give me a bit of cash and started Mortgage Style from my spare room.

How long has the business been running for?

I set up Mortgage Style Ltd in 2006.

What is the most rewarding part of running your own business?

We love helping people. It is particularly satisfying to say yes to someone when they have been declined by banks and through other independent brokers. I honestly believe that if we can’t find a solution for the client then no-one can.

What has been the most difficult part of it?

The hours you need to put in to be successful can take their toll and it can be lonely when there is no business partner to share the responsibility and pressure with.

Any plans to expand in the future?

We are keen to grow the business and build on the model we have created. We would like to have 10 advisers in the next 3 years and with that is the requirement for more administration staff.

Any advice to young people in the area looking to start a business?

Firstly you should enjoy what you do an ideally be good at it or be prepared to work hard to get it. Don’t consider starting your own business if you’re not prepared to work hard, if you want an easy life, get a job!

However if you work hard, treat people well and are positive then the rewards are there to be had, you will probably never go back to an employed role again.

Thanks to Marcus for taking the time to speak to us, and congratulations on the award. If you’re looking for a mortgage or advice on buying a home, visit Mortgage Style’s website here. See their reviews on Trustpilot.
